All across the country, budget cuts are being implemented, putting the cost of public higher education out of reach for many students. The economic crisis is being used as an excuse: we are told that "there isn't enough money to go around." At the same time, Washington has shoveled 14 trillion dollars to Wall Street, and is continuing the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The fight back has begun. March 4th, Day of Action to Defend Public Education, represents a significant step forward. Students and workers in institutions of public education will stand up and make their voices heard.
But in order to challenge the priorities of this system, a political alternative is needed- one that puts human need before profit.
